Man Threatens Deputies With Knife, Boiling Water in La Mesa SWAT

The suspect threatened deputies with a knife and even a pot of boiling water, officials said.

A La Mesa man was taken into custody Monday, accused of elder abuse in a dispute with a neighbor.

The suspect was involved in a nearly three hour standoff with San Diego Sheriff's Deputies (SDSO) that began before 5 p.m. at the home on Alta Mira Drive near Mount Helix.

The suspect threatened deputies with a knife and even a pot of boiling water, officials said.

San Diego Sheriff's Deputies intially responded to a report of a fight between two men inside the home.

A neighbor called 911 to report a man driving erratically up and down the street.

When the neighbor confronted the driver, he said the suspect aggressively approached him.

At one point sheriff's cruisers were stacked up the hill, shutting the street down for close to five hours.

Aaron Spaulding, 31, was taken into custody around 7:49 p.m., deputies confirmed.

Spaulding lives with his parents and Monday night while he sits in jail, they were back at their home trying to clean up the mess left behind.

Of course this was a disruption for neighbors who had to either wait inside their homes, or on the other side of the yellow tape at the bottom of the hill if they hadn't gotten home from work yet.

Eventually Spaulding just walked out the front door on his own and surrendered. One man praised the deputies for their restraint.

"They took a lot of precaution it looks like to me, if it's going to wind down without anyone getting hurt, it's all good. We're mildly inconvenienced, but so what," said resident Larry Henning.

The victim, described by deputies as 78 years old, suffered minor injuries.

Spaulding faces several charges including elder abuse for the altercation with the neighbor.
