Second Victim of SR-163 Rollover Dies

The first victim killed in the Nov. 9 crash included former U.S. Marine Steven Gagnon

A woman involved in a rollover crash that also killed a 24-year-old former U.S. Marine has died, California Highway Patrol officials confirmed Tuesday morning.

According to Jake Sanchez of the CHP, the woman – who was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries on Saturday following the crash – succumbed to her wounds and died at the hospital on Monday.

Her name has not yet been released. Her cause of death will be determined by the San Diego County Medical Examiner's office.

The deadly accident happened just after 6 p.m. Saturday on a curved stretch of road on southbound State Route 163 and the State Route 52 connector in the Kearny Mesa area.

Officials said a vehicle occupied by former U.S. Marine Steven Gagnon and two women veered off the freeway and fell down a 200-foot embankment. Officials said the car appeared to be traveling at a high rate of speed when it took the corner at the connector.

Gagnon, who was sitting in the backseat and was not wearing a seat belt, was killed at the scene. The two women in the car were injured and taken to local hospitals.

CHP officials immediately closed off parts of SR-163 and SR-52 following the fatal crash. No other vehicles or victims were involved.
