Rady Children's Hospital Gets in Halloween Spirit

Young patients at Rady Children’s Hospital transformed into boxers, princesses and superheroes on Thursday, thanks to a Halloween store chain’s gift.

Spirit Halloween hosted the Halloween party at the hospital, filling the halls with spooky decorations and providing an array of costumes for the patients.

Patient Jessica Madueno chose the boxer costume, saying she’s a fighter so it fit perfectly.

“I’m fighting cancer,” she said.

While it’s more than weeks until Halloween, Thursday felt like the holiday, with plenty of activities and even a visit from Chase of Nickelodeon’s “Paw Patrol.”

The event is intended “so they can just be kids again,” said Mindy Collins, director of corporate and community development for the hospital. “It really feels like Halloween here in the hospital.”

Launched in 2006, Spirit Halloween’s Spirit of Children raises money through customer donations for children’s hospitals nationwide. In all, Spirit of Children has donated $390,764 to Rady.
