Pedestrian Killed by Train Near Oceanside Harbor

A person was fatally struck by an Amtrak train in Oceanside on Saturday morning, authorities said.

The crash happened around 10:30 a.m. on the tracks that run below the Harbor Drive bridge near the Intersection of Harbor Drive and Carmelo Drive, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

Amtrak Surfliner Train 769 was heading northbound from the Oceanside Transit Center and as it approached the bridge, the engineer saw a person lying face down on the tracks, sheriff's Deputy Christopher Campbell said.

The engineer sounded the horn and activated the train's emergency brake but the person made no attempt to move and the train was unable to stop before striking the person, he said.

The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tracks were closed for around 90 minutes as the San Diego Sheriff's Transit Enforcement Unit investigates the crash.

The tracks have since been reopened but Amtrak said to expect heavy delays for services between San Diego and Los Angeles.
