Man Caught Filming Women in Walmart Bathroom Sentenced to 5 Months

He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for life

The man who was caught filming women and at least one girl in the bathroom of a Kearny Mesa Walmart was sentenced Thursday to five months in jail and ordered to register as a sex offender, the San Diego City Attorney's Office announced Friday.

Richard Lawrence Shaw, 52, last month pleaded guilty to nine misdemeanor counts of secretly filming a person.

He was caught filming under the stall of a women's bathroom of the Walmart store at 4840 Shawline Street on Jan. 30, 2018.

The woman noticed a cell phone under the wall of her stall and alerted security who found Shaw in the adjoining stall. Responding San Diego police officers search Shaw's phone and found videos of at least eight women and one young girl using the Walmart restroom.

“This predator invaded the privacy of women and children in a space where they felt protected and safe. Even worse, he captured his victims on video for his own enjoyment and dissemination,” City Attorney Mara W. Elliott said in a statement. “We will not tolerate these abuses in our community. Our office will prosecute sex crimes and similar abuses to the fullest extent of the law.”

Shaw was sentenced to 150 days in jail and to register as sex offender for life. In addition, he was ordered to wear and GPS monitor, stay away from the Kerney Mesa Walmart and away from all victims and children.
