Good Samaritan Severely Injured While Saving Woman

A man known in his neighborhood as a good Samaritan is in critical condition after trying to rescue a woman on Monday night who was standing in the middle of a street in Fullerton trying to get motorists to hit her.

The collision occurred in the 1100 block of West Orangethorpe Avenue in Fullerton, near the border with Anaheim, about 9 a.m., said Lt. Tom Basham of the Fullerton Police Department.

He was taken to the University of California Irvine Medical Center, Basham said.

Kim Taylor of Anaheim who runs an Alcoholics Anonymous chapter near the collision site witnessed the collision and called 911.

"There was a girl in the middle of the street, trying to kill herself," Taylor said. "The gentleman that got hit went into the street to try and rescue her."

Taylor said the man was known for bringing bread to churches and trying to help people.

The woman, who Taylor said she had seen around, had just turned 21.

Taylor said the man was hit after he got the woman out of the street. A police car pulled up, and he went back across the street to talk to the officer when he was hit.
