Drug Runners Dump Pot, Nabbed by Mexican Navy

U.S. Coast Guard crews picked up 4,971 pounds of pot jettisoned in the ocean by drug runners who escaped into the hands of the
Mexican navy, officials said.

The seizure took place about 160 miles off San Diego on Friday, USCG Petty Officer 3rd class Henry Dunphy said.

The suspects were spotted by from the air, and an 87-foot cutter was dispatched to intercept the vessel, he said.   The suspects, however, dumped at least part of their load and outran the Coast Guard vessel as they sped into Mexican territorial waters, according to Dunphy.

The Mexican navy, however, nabbed the suspects offshore, he said.
