Water has been restored to hundreds of people in the Torrey Pines and La Jolla area, but don't drink it.
The water department says there was a break in a pipe in a canyon Sunday night.
Crews couldn't work on the break, because the area is too dangerous in the dark. However, they were able to reroute water from another pipe to restore service.
Crews will return to the site Monday morning.
In the meantime, there is a boil water order in effect for residents in the communities of Torrey Pines, Torrey Hills, Del Mar Mesa, Carmel Valley, and Pacific Highlands Ranch.
Residents there are to use boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking and cooking purposes as a safety precaution.
