‘Distraught' Woman Struck, Killed in Collision

A 29-year-old woman distraught over the loss of her father was struck and killed by a motorist in Carlsbad Thursday night.

Hortencia Perez was driving with a friend along Rancho Santa Fe Rd. in Carlsbad when she became "distraught" over her father's recent death and pulled over, a Medical Examiner report stated.

She stopped her car in the bike lane, but unknowingly left part of her car in the traffic lane.

As she stepped out of her car, an SUV struck both her and the car, the medical examiner wrote. Police say she entered the number three lane of the street before being struck by oncoming traffic.

She was taken to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries in the emergency room.

The Carlsbad Police Department is investigating the collision.
