Report of Attack Puts Students on High Alert

Campus police at UC-San Diego are investigating the report of a rape in a parking lot shared by students and La Jolla Playhouse patrons.

A woman was approached by a man in parking lot number 102 around 8:30 p.m. on February 3, pushed to the ground and raped, according to campus police.  The suspect fled on foot toward North Torrey Pines Road, police said.

The woman reported the crime to campus police February 19. Police are not saying why the victim waited more than two weeks to come forward, but the information was immediately released in an email alert Friday to students and staff.

According to people who use the lot located on the southwest side of the campus, the backlights aren't turned on at night.

"It does make you a little more self conscious," UCSD Student Joice Hwang said.

Police don't have a sketch of a suspect, and the description so far is vague.

"The suspect is like a 5-9 to six foot Asian male.  I'm like, oh that’s like half the campus," UCSD Student Emmanuel Pun said.

Students who feel concerned about safety are being urged to use the campus escort program.  Anyone with any information about the alleged crime is asked to call campus police at (858) 534-4359.
