Wanted: Witnesses to Deadly I-15 Crash Near Deer Springs

The minivan carrying an Encanto family flipped near Deer Springs Road

Several days after two children were killed in a crash along Interstate 15, CHP investigators are asking witnesses to come forward.

According to CHP, a Toyota Scion was traveling south near Deer Springs Road just north of Escondido around 2:30 p.m. when the Scion driver lost control and hit a minivan carrying a family, causing it to flip over.

Latrell Pearson, 10, and Xavier Ruffin, 10, were ejected from the vehicle and died from their injuries. CHP investigators said Pearson was not wearing his seatbelt.

Roy and Barbara Ruffin of Encanto and five other family members were taken to area hospitals. Roy suffered a broken finger and Barbara injured her foot according to relatives.

The Scion driver and passenger were not injured.

Now, CHP officers said they need to find witnesses who may have been traveling behind the cars involved in the crash.

They specifically need witnesses who were traveling southbound on I-15 north of Deer Springs Rd. just before the crash.

Drivers who may have information may call the Oceanside area office during business hours at (760) 757-1675 or The Border Communications Center at (858) 637-3800.
