$153M Project to Widen Bridge on Ocean Beach-Mission Bay Route

The expansion will allow for separate bridges for northbound and southbound traffic.

The two-lane bridge that connects Ocean Beach and Point Loma with Mission Beach and Mission Bay will be widened to six lanes with bike lanes and a pedestrian sidewalk.

Construction on the $153 million West Mission Bay Drive Bridge expansion project is slated to begin this summer with an estimated completion date of 2022.

The bridge was originally built in the 1950s when the beach communities were not as populated as they are today.

Caltrans recently evaluated the bridge, according to city officials, and found it to be functionally obsolete.

The expansion will allow for separate bridges for northbound and southbound traffic. Each direction will have three lanes of traffic flow.

The project also includes roadway widening and improvements along Sports Arena Boulevard, West Mission Bay Drive and the westbound Interstate 8 off-ramp.
