2 Shot by Deputy, Fugitive Escapes

Two men were shot by a Sheriff's Deputy on the Pala Indian Reservation as Deputies were trying to apprehend a man with a warrant for his arrest.

The incident happened shortly after 3:00 am when two Sheriff's Deputies pursued a black El Camino onto a dirt road off Highway 76 near Lilac Rd.  "The deputies identified the vehicle as belonging to 23 year old Ryan Rico wanted on a no-bail felony warrant," said Lieutenant Dennis Brugos of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Homicide Division.

Brugos said the deputies involved in the incident were still being questioned and details of the incident are unclear.  But he said a green Jeep Cherokee containing two men approached the deputies and one of them opened fire at the vehicle. It's unclear at this point what led up to the shooting. The two men drove to the Pala Fire Station at Lilac and Highway 76 where they were spotted by Pala Tribal Police and taken into custody.

Brugos says the conditions of the suspects were unknown but both were undergoing surgery for their injuries at Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.  One is believed to be the brother of Ryan Rico.

Ryan Rico was also driving with a female companion in the black El Camino.  She was being questioned.
