Hubba hubba -- what a ride. Suddenly, biking through Kearny Mesa is a pleasure instead of a bumpy nightmare.
Long rated as some of the worst pock-marked pavement in the county, recent repaving of a big section of Kearny Villa Road has transformed the "KM" into a two-wheeled dream.
The improvements were made a couple of sections of what is the main drag, east of I-15, running the entire length of Kearny-Mesa. The new pavement starts on the north end, just about where the big SDG&E complex is -- you know, right across from the establishment that seems to be a used car lot by day and a nudie bar by night.
The re-do ends at Balboa but picks up right on the other side and continues south all the way past the new apartments on the other side of Aero Drive. If you're a bicyclist and are familiar with the route, you know where it is. Maybe you gave up riding it because of the all the craters - if so, it's time to give it another shot. This 1/12 mile stretch is some of the nicest, smoothest cycling in the county.
