Mom May Not Know Best

Grandparents learn how to take care of the kids again

Helping out with your kids' kids isn't what it used to be. "Twenty or 30 years ago, it was considered safe for babies to sleep on their stomachs, parents held infants in their arms when they rode in the car, " according to Joan Quigley, RN, MSN, NP, Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla

But now what was considered the norm for bringing up baby is now different from what grandparents were taught about child rearing.

So Scripps Memorial Hospital Community Health is offering a new class especially for grandparents called "Grandparenting Today". It's an introduction to the role they will be playing in their grandchildren's lives, and helps them adapt to the changes that have taken place since their own children were young.

Sleeping can be a major issue. And while years ago it was considered safe to put babies to sleep on their stomachs, today that's considered dangerous because of the possiblity of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome said Quigley.  "Grandparenting Today" offers tips for creating clear communication betweengrandparents and parents including how and when grandparents should speak up.
