2 Women Killed After Car Strikes Street Light, Hydrant in Echo Park

Two women on the sidewalk were killed as a car hit them Sunday near Echo Park, firefighters said.

A car struck a street light, fire hydrant and then the two women, killing them, authorities said.

Two people in the car needed to be cut out of the mangled wreck and were rushed to hospitals with critical injuries, according to Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The crash, at 9:21 a.m., also resulted in a sheared-off a fire hydrant and geyser in the 1000 block of Rosemont Avenue.

That location is near Marathon Street, about four blocks west of Echo Park and one block south of Sunset Boulevard.

Police had no other additional linformation.
