To say that Michelle Ciccarelli Lerach tends a "garden" to supply her cupcakery with fruits, herbs and produce is a major understatement. After touring through five acres of plantings that overlook the Pacific, and with a few berry stains on our chins, we came away thinking more along the lines of "gorgeous farm."
Nearly everything that grows on her property is utilized at Cups La Jolla, the nearby organic cupcakery and cafe that she runs with the ranking of "3-star green certified." From herbs and citrus to berries and edible flowers, the ingredients land in refreshments, cooking-class savories and an ever-changing repertoire of cupcakes that weren't the kind you ate as a kid.
