Restaurant and Food Service Convention rolls into town

There are some nifty gadgets being shown off at this week’s Restaurant and Food Service convention in San Diego.
The convention is not open to the public, but restaurant and food service professionals from across the country are in town with ideas and new products that will eventually get mouths watering and wallets opened.

In all, there are more than 450 exhibitors at the convention center, showcasing everything from sushi to prime cuts of beef to tequila testing to pickled green beans for your Bloody Mary. Plus, there are culinary competitions and the latest energy-saving ovens
More and more, technology is affecting the industry: There are now devices that allow you to “page” your waiter or waitress to your table, Blue Tooth devices that let you hear a TV in, say, if your in a loud sports bar, and even a sushi-making machine, a device that will likely be popular with big food chains.

With the down economy, business owners have been challenged to convince consumers to go out and spend their money.

“You see a lot of prix fixe menus happening in the market place, you see a lot of value menus happening in the market place, a lot of great offers happening, special times, special hours, where those restaurants may have not looked at that in the past,” said event organizer Ron Mathews.
