Great Scot!

From hammers to harps, there's fun for everyone.

PROPER DRESS: October is a busy time of year for avid sports fans, because every major sport is still in play. You need your ringer tees for baseball, your face paint for football, your jerseys for hockey, and those foam noodle things for basketball games. Oh, and you can't forget your tartan kilt for the Seaside Highland Games, which take place Oct. 11-13 in Ventura.

BRAWN AND BEAUTY: A longtime part of preserving Scottish history, the highland games consist of a wide variety of traditional Celtic athletics, culture, and whiskey. The event kicks off on Friday night with whiskey tasting, a buffet dinner, and a plaid-filled fashion show. On Saturday and Sunday, let the games begin, with athletic competitions ranging from "Tossing the Caber" to "Putting the Stone," bagpiping contests, Highland and Country dance performances, and more. Event-goers can also try their hand at making beautiful music at the Harp Petting Zoo, while children participate in arts and crafts at the Children's Glen.

IN 'N ABOUT: Friday's festivities begin at 5 p.m., while Saturday and Sunday events run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door, with prices ranging from $5 to $25 for one-day and two-day passes. Check out the website for more information and bring your whole clan.
