This weekend hundreds of San Diegans will hit the beach- but not in the way that you would expect. The third annual Survivor Beach charity event brings locals to the shore to support and important cause.
Participants will line up along the beach on August 9 starting at 8 a.m. with their surfboards touching end to end. The line starts at Scripps Pier and will stretch toward La Jolla Shores in hopes of creating the longest line yet. Last year “Survivor Beach” was three football fields in length.
The event, which began in 2007, is sponsored by Moores UCSD Cancer Center and Genentech Oceanside and is meant to raise awareness about cancer and to support local cancer research. Many participants stand on the beach in honor of someone they know who is fighting cancer, bringing locals together.
Heali’i’s Polynesian Revue will perform traditional dances at the event and all participants will be entered to win a pair of tickets to the 2009 Luau & Longboard Invitational on August 23.
So grab your board and head down to La Jolla. Admission is free, participants get a souvenir, and most importantly, you’ll be supporting an important cause.
