San Diego Music Awards Stay Gold

The San Diego Music Awards are basically like the Grammys but smaller and everyone's a lot drunker.

Officials announced Tuesday that the 2012 awards were scheduled for Aug. 13 at Humphreys By the Bay. The annual ceremony recognizes San Diego's finest musicians in 27 assorted categories. Nominees will be selected by the exhaulted San Diego Music Academy, which is essentially just a ragtag crew of people from local print, television and radio. The list of nominees will be announced on June 17, and the public can vote in the artist categories from June 26 to July 17 on the SDMA website. Winners in the album-related categories are decided on by the aforementioned "academy."

Because a music awards ceremony would be kind of silly (and quiet) without any actual music, some of San Diego's best and brightest will be on hand to perform. The Howls, the Mattson 2, Hyena and Dead Feather Moon have all been confirmed to play the ceremony, and more bands will be announced soon.

As is the case every year, the SDMAs are brought to you by the San Diego Music Foundation, with proceeds going to their Guitars for Schools program. As the name implies, the program buys guitars for schools throughout San Diego so that we can get tomorrow's shredders started today.

Tickets for the San Diego Music Awards go on sale at noon on May 29 and can be purchased here.
