“The Fighter” Trailer Comes Out Swinging

The trailer for "The Fighter," starring Mark Wahlberg as former pro boxer "Irish" Mickey Ward, is here and frankly we're puzzled by the whole thing.

Watching the trailer, one can't help but be reminded of Wahlberg's football film "Invincible." Both tell the story of a blue-collar guy with money troubles who gets one last shot at pro-sports glory at an age long past when most folks have thrown in the towel. Oh, and there's a super-cute bartender in the mix, too.

But the pedigree of "The Fighter" is pretty incredible, with Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Melissa Leo co-starring and David O. Russell behind the camera.

Russell has made a career of changing genres, doing dark incest comedy ("Spanking the Monkey"), a road movie about a guy looking for his birth parents (Flirting With Disaster"), an Iraq War I adventure ("Three Kings") and... well, we're still not sure what exactly "I (Heart) Huckabees" was. What would attract him to a story that appears to be nothing more than your standard feel-good underdog sports drama is beyond us, but we're gonna watch it.

"The Fighter" opens Dec. 10.
