Blinded By the Ice

Gemological Institute of America’s annual open house is Oct. 16

If you like bright and shiny and more than you can afford, you're in luck this month in North County.

The Gemological Institute of America’s annual Jewelry Career Fair and Open House is set for Oct. 16 at its Carlsbad headquarters. Getting star treatment will be a red-carpet necklace, diamond bracelets and brooches, 73 large trilliant-cut gems and lots of other amazing things to ogle.

For many, the highlight of this year's event will be a necklace worn by "Beverly Hills 90210" star AnnaLynne McCord at  this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards. The necklace is so impressive that they've named it. The "Shibuki," which means "splash" in Japanese, is made up of 5.52 carats of diamonds set in 158 grams of platinum, authorities said. It's one of four necklaces from the Platinum Guild International’s Aqua Collection that will be on view.

"This year’s open house will be filled with a wide spectrum of unique and eclectic pieces ... there is something for everyone to see," said Terri Ottaway, GIA Museum curator.

Also eye-popping: a bracelet crusted with 630 diamonds; diamond brooches and intricate enameled jewelry.

The GIA Jewelry Career Fair is a free, all-day event running from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
