The defending Olympic champion U.S. men's volleyball team was eliminated from the London 2012 Olympic Games with a straight-set quarterfinal loss to Italy.

Local Olympians Reid Priddy and David Lee competed in Wednesday’s quarterfinal match against Italy, the No. 4 seed from Group B.

Priddy, of Encinitas and Lee of Alpine along with Tierrasanta’s Rich Lambourne are returning members of the 2008 Olympic gold medal-winning team.

But the men could not win over Italy. They lost to Italy after the three matches, 28-26, 25-20 and then 25-20.

Team USA saw disappointment In the pool as well. The U.S. men's water polo lost to Croatia after dropping its last two games, losing to gold medal-favorite Serbia on Saturday and then falling to three-time defending champion Hungary 11-6 on Monday.

The loss against Croatia Wednesday dashed any hopes at a medal for the Americans.

Also Wednesday, a number of Chula Vista OTC athletes will compete in Track and Field.

Coronado resident Alice Schmidt will be running in the 800m semifinals Thursday. Two-time Olympian has set personal bests in the 800m and 1500m in last two seasons.

In Beijing, Schmidt clocked a 2:02.33 and finished sixth in her opening-round heat. She did not advance.

In the heats Wednesday, Schmidt finished with a 2:01.65 finish, more than a second off the leader.

Brad Walker will compete in the finals for men’s pole vault after qualifying with a mark of 5.60 early Wednesday. See results here

It's a new day for Coronado sailor Molly O’Bryan Vandemoer, skipper Anna Tunnicliffe and teammate Debbie Capozzi. The women’s match racing team couldn't get ahead in either race Tuesday and 2012 World Champion Silja Lehtinen of Finland takes a 2-0 lead into the next quarterfinal race.

As Vandemoer explained the two matches were very close racing with the boats evenly matched. "First race we lead most of the race and last 5-6 boat lengths we may have went for a little more than we should have," she said.

"They fall for a fake jibe and you have one planned, and it didn't go our way. On the second (race), we were pretty even. They had a little piece of us on starboard the whole time, so they were able to stay ahead. We never got enough to get ahead. The Nothe course is really shifty, and you have your game plan and if something comes down you gotta roll with it."

In women’s hammer throw, local athlete Jessica Cosby failed to qualify for finals. See results here
