USC has announced it will build a 110,000-square foot building that will house meeting rooms, coaches offices and a locker room for its football team, along with a weight room and other facilities for all its 21 sports.

The yet-to-be-named two-story building will include an academic center, weight room and digital media production facility for all Trojan teams.

Groundbreaking is scheduled for January and construction will take about 18 months, according to athletic director Pat Haden.

"Once this facility is completed, our physical infrastructure will be among the finest of any athletic department in the nation," said Haden.

The building will be directly west of Heritage Hall, the athletic department's headquarters, on the site of an intramural field adjacent to the Galen Dining Center. That field will be relocated just south of its current spot, between the new building and the Loker Track Stadium.

Fundraising has begun for the $70 million project, which will include the cost of the building, a maintenance endowment and renovation of vacated space in Heritage Hall.

"We are very excited about the number of donors who are stepping up with major gifts to make this project a reality," said USC President C.L. Max Nikias.

The building will have an approximately 60,000-square foot basement, which will include a 32,000-square foot weight room, more than triple the size of the 9,600-square foot weight room in Heritage Hall, an 18,000-square foot athletic training room, more than six times the size of Heritage Hall's 2,700- square foot training room, and men's and women's locker rooms.

Heritage Hall will remain in use and "always be the central point of our athletic department," said Haden.

"The reality is that we have outgrown Heritage Hall and we are badly undersized and overcrowded in there," said Haden. "This new building will be the finest of its kind anywhere and will provide our student-athletes every opportunity to succeed academically and athletically."
