Time to Come Home

On the field the eight game road trip was bad, off the field it was far worse.

Just a day after learning of Tony Gwynn's death the Friars got off to a good enough start at Safeco Field. Rene Rivera's solo homer in the second staked them to a 1-0 lead. That lead didn't last long. Starter Eric Stults (2-9) gave up a two-run shot to Jesus Montero in the second and another one to Robinson Cano in the fifth. Seattle tacked on two more runs in the seventh en route to a 6-1 win.

The Padres finished the trip that began in Philadelphia and ended in Seattle with a 1-7 record. Their lone win was over the Mets in New York on Saturday.

The Mariners are on their way to San Diego as well. The teams play a short two-game series at Petco Park beginning Wednesday.
