There is no enjoyable way to talk about a blowout so let’s just rip the band aid off quickly. The Padres had their 5-game winning streak snapped with a 10-1 loss to the Rockies at Petco Park on Saturday afternoon.
San Diego’s only run came on a solo homer by Austin Hedges, his 11th of the season to lead all National League catchers. But that blast was one of just four hits the Friars managed against Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood. The Colorado righty had made two previous starts against the Padres, getting beat up to the tune of nine earned runs in 10.2 innings.
This time he was rock-solid, striking out eight in 8.0 innings. Chatwood’s offense made sure he had plenty of room to maneuver.
The Rockies got to Padres starter Jhoulys Chacin in the 3rd inning when Gerardo Parra drove in Calros Gonzalez with an RBI single. Colorado got three more in the 4th inning, a pair of them on a home run by All-Star 3rd baseman Nolan Arenado that gave the Rockies a 4-0 lead. Chacin allowed four runs (three earned) in 6.0 innings with seven punchouts. He had only allowed a total of two earned runs in four previous starts at Petco Park this season.
Hedges hit his homer in the bottom half of the 5th to make it a 4-1 game but in the 7th inning the Rockies put it away when Ian Desmond hit a grand slam off Padres reliever Jose Torres to put Colorado up 8-1 and erase any hope of a comeback win.
The Padres can still win the series on Sunday afternoon when Jarred Cosart takes the mound against Tyler Anderson.
