Billionaire Meg Whitman is continuing her record-breaking spending spree in her quest to become the Republican nominee in the California governor's race.

Campaign finance reports filed with the Secretary of State's office show Whitman has spent $46 million since last year on TV ads, consultants and other campaign expenses. Of that amount, $39 million came from Whitman's personal fortune.

The Los Angeles Times pulled out a calculator to break those numbers down a bit:

What should an aspiring candidate for governor do if she has never run a campaign before and wants to nearly double her lead in polls as her party's primary election approaches?

Here is Meg Whitman's answer: Spend $358,439 a day, $14,935 an hour, $249 a minute.

The reports show her campaign has $4.5 million left. She laughed Tuesday when she was asked in Sacramento if she is worried about running out of money.

Whitman's GOP rival, Steve Poizner, has given his campaign $19 million of his own money and has $14 million left. Poizner says he plans to spend most of his funds on an ad blitz in the last weeks before the June primary.

Democratic front-runner Jerry Brown has about $14 million in the bank.
