Needles were found in four sandwiches made by the airline's Amsterdam caterer, Gate Gourmet.

Sewing needles were discovered in five sandwiches on separate U.S.-bound Delta flights from Amsterdam, leading to one passenger being injured, according to reports.

At least two needles were found by passengers  – one on an Atlanta-bound flight, and another on a Minneapolis-bound flight, Reuters reported. According to Delta spokeswoman Kristin Baur, the passenger on the Minneapolis-bound plane was injured by the needle, but declined medical treatment.

The other needles were found on a separate Atlanta-bound flight and a Seattle-bound flight.

The Wall Street Journal reported that the FBI has launched a criminal investigation with the full cooperation of Delta and Gate Gourment, the airline's Amsterdam caterer.

"Delta is taking this matter extremely seriously and is cooperating with local and federal authorities who are investigating the incident," the airline said in a statement.

Baur said after Delta learned of the incidents, it started serving pre-packaged pizza slices in lieu of the sandwiches. According to Baur, no problems have been reported.
