College Student Killed in Thanksgiving Morning Crash

Kely Austin Campbell, 22, was visiting family for Thanksgiving weekend

A 22-year-old college student who had flown into San Diego to visit his family for Thanksgiving weekend was killed in a crash in Escondido early Thursday morning, officials confirmed.

According to California Highway Patrol officials, the accident happened just past 2 a.m. on westbound Del Dios Highway and Via Rancho Parkway.

A report released by the Medical Examiner’s office said the driver of a sedan – identified as Rancho Santa Fe resident Kely Campbell – was traveling on Del Dios Highway when, for unknown reasons, he failed to make the turn at the Via Rancho Parkway intersection.

Campbell struck a dirt and rock embankment on the roadway.

A passerby later saw the wreckage and called 911, the ME report said.

When emergency crews arrived, they attempted resuscitative efforts but Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved and no other injuries were reported. Further information about Campbell has not yet been released.

Campbell's family has planned a memorial for him for Saturday, Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. at Emmanuel Faith Community Church in Escondido.
