U.S. Coast Guard Rescues Cruise Ship Passenger Near Point Loma

A passenger aboard Carnival Imagination 50 miles southwest of Point Loma began experiencing signs of acute appendicitis

A U.S. Coast Guard crew from San Diego rescued an ill woman from a cruise ship Saturday after she began experiencing signs of acute appendicitis, officials confirmed.

The Carnival Imagination cruise ship was approximately 50 miles southwest of Point Loma around 10 a.m. when Coast Guard Sector San Diego received the call for help.

A Coast Guard Sector San Diego MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter launched toward the cruise ship. Officials were then able to hoist the 24-year-old woman safely from the ship onto the Coast Guard chopper.

The woman was flown to Sector San Diego and, by 12:30 p.m., was transferred to an ambulance waiting to take her to Sharp Memorial Hospital. Officials said her condition is unknown.
