Tuberculosis Case Reported at UCSD

A case of tuberculosis has been reported at the University of California, San Diego, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) confirmed on Wednesday.

According to the HHSA, an individual at UCSD was recently diagnosed with tuberculosis and may have exposed students and staff. The HHSA says the period of exposure was from November 2, 2013 through March 22, 2013.

Health officials say symptoms of active TB include a persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. TB usually spreads through close, indoor contact with the infected individual and can be treated and cured with medication.

The HHSA is currently working with UCSD officials to notify those who were potentially exposed to TB on campus. Free TB testing will be offered to students and staff on Apr. 16 and Apr. 23 at the UCSD student health center located at 9500 Gilman Drive in La Jolla.

This latest case brings the total to 21 tuberculosis cases reported in the county so far in 2013. Last year, a total of 234 cases of TB were reported across San Diego.

Last month, a TB case was reported at Montgomery Adult School in Chula Vista. The first TB case of 2013 was reported back on Jan. 15 at El Camino High School.
