Protest Disrupts Grand Opening of New Chick-fil-A

As fans gathered to celebrate the grand opening of a new Chick-fil-A restaurant in Laguna Hills, a planned protest disrupted the event. Protestors are unhappy about comments made by the company's chief executive that oppose gay marriage. Janet Kwak reports for NBC4 News at 11 p.m. on July 25, 2012.

Rows of cars and lines of people wrapped around the Chick-fil-A restaurant in Carmel Mountain Wednesday evening, showing their support for the controversial fast food chain.

Chick-fil-A recently came under fire after the company’s CEO, Dan Cathy, publicly stated that he opposes gay marriage in an interview with the Baptist press.

On Wednesday, some conservative politicians declared the day “Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day” and encouraged fans of the company to show their support by visiting local Chick-fil-A restaurants.

In addition to the Carmel Mountain location, there was also a long line around lunch time at the restaurant on Sports Arena Boulevard.

On the other end of the heated controversy, gay rights supporters have called for a Chick-fil-A boycott and are planning upcoming protests of their own.

A boycott took place just last week at the grand opening of a  Laguna Hills Chick-fil-A .
