Stolen SUV Pursuit Ends in Crash

A high speed chase ended after the stolen SUV crashed into a tree in Carlsbad, police said.

Shortly before midnight on Sunday, the Carlsbad Police Department was conducting a traffic stop on a Toyota Sequoia near Carlsbad Village Drive off Interstate 5. The SUV did not stop when the police car turned on its lights and siren and instead continued northbound on Interstate 5.

The SUV tried to turn eastbound on Las Flores Drive, but because of the speed at which it was traveling, the car could not make the turn and instead continued ahead and collided with the curb and a tree at the 1200 block of Las Floras Drive.

When officers later checked the car’s registration, they discovered it was an unreported stolen car from Carlsbad.

Two male adults fled the vehicle and head into a field. California Highway Patrol, the San Diego Sheriff’s helicopter and the Oceanside Police Department officials searched the area with a police dog to look for the two men that fled.
Police said they did not find the two men.

The investigating into the stolen car continues.
