Apt Complex First to Use Only Solar Power

The recently opened Solterra EcoLuxury Apartments in Scripps Ranch will receive 100 percent of its power from solar modules — the first apartment community in San Diego to rely solely on energy derived from the sun.

The apartments, owned by San Diego real estate organization H.G. Fenton Co., will receive their power from Scottsdale, Ariz.-based Kyocera Solar Inc.

The company said that Solterra is also the first apartment in the nation to have smart thermostats that allow residents to manage energy usage from their smartphones. It is also incorporating energy-efficient and water-saving appliances, drip-irrigation landscaping and garages pre-wired to charge electric vehicles.

The solar modules were installed by San Diego-based Home Energy Systems Inc. on the roofs of the four apartment buildings, mounted atop carports and ground-mounted on a slope at the property’s south end.
