A man in Ramona was shot and left in a ditch Thursday evening, authorities said.

Sheriff's deputies were called to the 900 block of E Street in Ramona at around 4:45 p.m. Thursday.

Upon arrival, deputies said they found one man lying in a ditch near the road, suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg. A small handgun was found next to the man.

Deputies confirmed they got a separate call about a break-in at a home a few doors down just minutes before responding to the shooting.

Deputies said an initial investigation and witness statements led them to believe that the wounded man was possibly trying to break into a nearby residence and then fled from the home as the shooting occurred.

At this point, deputies are not sure if the man accidentally shot himself.

The man was transported to the hospital.

The investigation is ongoing. Check back for updates on this story.
