San Diego Olympic Athletes Compete in Rio Games: Aug. 14, 2016

Team USA athletes with ties to San Diego will compete in sailing, dressage, water polo and dressage from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Saturday

The competition at the 2016 Rio Olympics is heating up as we enter week two of the games. Sunday, San Diego athletes will fight for gold once again. 

Team USA athletes with ties to San Diego will compete in dressage, sailing, high jump and volleyball from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Today’s local contenders are:

  • Briana Provancha, a 2007 Point Loma High School graduate, trains at the Southwestern Yacht Club -- but on Sunday, she'll be taking to the water in Rio to compete in sailing. She races at 9:05 a.m. Sunday. 
  • San Diego native Caleb Paine will compete in sailing on Sunday as well, in men's finn preliminary races seven and eight. In his first race Saturday, he ranked 17th. In his second race, he worked his way up to a 7th ranking. He races at 9:05 a.m. 
  • Coronado native and Coronado High School alum Jesse Smith will battle it out in the pool Sunday as the team continues its quest for water polo gold. Smith will compete with the team against Italy at 11:30 a.m. 
  • Chula Vista native Desiree Linden raced in the women's marathon Sunday morning at the Sambadromo in Maracana. Find the results here.
  • Amy Cragg, Long Beach native, also raced in the women's marathon Sunday morning at the Sambadromo in Maracana. Find the results here.
  • Longtime Chula Vista Olympic Training Center resident athlete Rickey Robertson finished 17th in the high jump Sunday after clearing 2.26m. 
  • Bonsall native and Fallbrook High School alum Carli Lloyd will take to the court with the women's volleyball team to compete against China. The game will start at 1:05 p.m. 
  • Lloyd will be joined by fellow San Diego-area native Karsta Lowe, a La Costa Canyon High School alum and Rancho Santa Fe native
