A man walking near a La Mesa park Tuesday was held up at gunpoint for his iPod.

A 23-year-old man called police around 9:30 p.m. saying he had been mugged near Highwood Park on Junior High Drive.

The victim described the thief as an African American about 16-17 years old, thin build with an afro wearing jeans and a red and black hoodie with numbers on the front.

The suspect showed a large caliber semi-automatic handgun, demanded the victim empty his pockets and then run from the area police said.

The iPod was the only thing stolen officers said.

Earlier Tuesday, a similar robbery was reported in Encinitas around 1:00 p.m. Tuesday in the parking lot of Ritz Colony Apartments on Encinitas Boulevard police said.
