Poway Teen on Phone Killed by Train in Del Mar

A Poway teenager was struck and killed by a train Saturday night in Del Mar. Local activists are pushing for the installation of a safe pedestrian crossing, but are not sure that can prevent all tragedies on the tracks.

"People are getting hit on the tracks all the time" said Del Mar resident Tina Harris.

Harris lives right above the rail tracks near 13th street in Del Mar, she has seen the after effects of multiple dead bodies on the tracks

"You should see the conductor, so shaken up," Harris said. "They don't want to hit somebody."

The most recent railway death in Del Mar happened Saturday night when a 19-year-old Poway man was struck and killed by a northbound train.  The name of the victim has not been released.

According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the train's conductor spotted three individuals along the tracks near 13th Street.  The conductor reportedly flashed the trains lights and sounded it's horn, before striking the individual.

Frank Stonebank is a Del Mar activist pushing for the installation of a safe pedestrian crossing over the rail tracks.  Stonebanks say's while there is progress being made on that initiative, ultimately it's up to each person to be safe, "You can't prevent it, you're never going to be able to stop absolutely reckless acts on the tracks."
