Special Pet License Plates Presale Extended

California has more dogs, cats and cars than any other state, so why aren't pet-loving drivers rallying around a special license plate?

California lawmakers have approved a bill that would give pet lovers more time to gather support for a specialty license plate program.

The Assembly voted 67-0 on Thursday to send AB610 to Gov. Jerry Brown. The bill by Democratic Assemblyman Jose Solorio of Santa Ana provides a one-year extension to pre-sell 7,500 specialty license plates.

About 4,000 have been sold so far.

Money raised from the sale of the plates would fund spay and neuter programs. Supporters say spaying and neutering is the best way to reduce the euthanasia rate for pets.

The California Veterinary Medical Board is sponsoring the campaign.

The program also is being promoted on the Facebook page set up for the governor's Welsh corgi, Sutter.

In an earlier report from the Associated Press, campaign president Judie Mancuso says the volunteer effort has no money for advertising. And people who bought the plate have nothing to show for it.
