Middle School in Encinitas Damaged in Fire

The blaze sparked at around 3:40 a.m. at Oak Crest Middle School on Balour Drive

A school in Encinitas sustained significant damage early Saturday when a fire ripped through the campus, officials confirmed.

At around 3:40 a.m., a fire sparked in the administration building at Oak Crest Middle School on Balour Drive, setting off the fire alarm system. When firefighters arrived, they could see flames shooting from the windows of the building.

Multiple fire agencies from the North County rushed to the school to help battle the blaze, including crews from Solana Beach, Rancho Santa Fe and Carlsbad. Firefighters were able to knock down the flames and prevent the fire from spreading.

No one was injured in the incident.

The school’s counseling and attendance offices sustained the bulk of the damage. A school official said those offices will be closed Monday, but classes will go on as normal for the roughly 900 students who attend Oak Crest Middle School.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. It is unknown, at this point, if arson is suspected.

Oak Crest Middle School is part of the San Dieguito Union High School District.
