Jeff Kierman is an agent for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. He's a consultant to the "NCIS" television show. And soon he's going to be part of the San Diego Sheriff's Department's homicide squad.

Sheriff's Sgt. Roy Frank told the North County Times that the U.S. Customs and Border Protection has one agent and the California Department of Justice has six agents assigned to the county's homicide unit. He says each agency pays their agents to work full-time on Sheriff's Department murder cases. Now, Kierman is the unit's first NCIS agent.

Frank says San Diego County's military bases and international border make the agents and their resources invaluable.

The eight agents work with 14 full-time county homicide detectives.
