A traffic stop on Interstate 5 ended with an arrest and more than 14 pounds of methamphetamine on Wednesday.

The incident began when Border Patrol agents pulled over a Volkswagen Jetta near the Avenida Pico exit in San Clemente at about 7:40 a.m. Officers said the 18-year-old driver gave inconsistent answers during questioning, prompting them to call out a K-9 unit.

The dog alerted on the car’s rear wheel wells, agents said, and additional inspection of the vehicle revealed secret compartments with 12 bundles of meth hidden inside.

Border Patrol officials said that the suspect was turned over to agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration.
