A woman hiking along a popular East County trail had to be rescued Tuesday evening, the Sheriff's Department said.

The 28-year-old suffered heat exhaustion while hiking near Three Sisters Falls, south of Julian, at about 4 p.m. Tuesday, according to a statement from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The department sent its ASTREA helicopter to locate the victim. She was spotted about halfway down the trail from trail-head parking area.

Three firefighters walked the victim to the helicopter, where she was flown to the fire station in Ramona for medical assistance.

The extent of her injuries is not known at this time.

Authorities are often called to rescue hikers at the trail, especially on hot days like Tuesday.
