A man desperately searched for victims inside a car that was fully engulfed by flames on Thursday night, according to firefighters.

Around 10 p.m. on Thursday a car on northbound Interstate 805 caught fire, prompting a driver to pull over and help.

Video shows the man risking his safety to see if there was anyone injured inside the car. He used a flashlight to break open the car windows, but the vehicle was empty.

Officials arrived at the scene just north of Home Avenue and extinguished the flames in less than 15 minutes.

Firefighters said the car caught fire because of a failure of equipment or heat source in the engine compartment.

The fire is under investigation.
