Football Player Critically Injured in Fight

A Grossmont College football player is in critical condition after a fight in a local park that involved two groups, according to police.

Mike Bajko, a current student at Grossmont College, suffered multiple head wounds in a fight where attackers used some kind of weapons, possibly baseball bats, according to La Mesa police.

The fight took place around 2 a.m. Saturday in Northmont Park on Severin Drive. Bajko and at least two other young men, all between 16-21 years old, were injured during the fight, police said.

Mike Bajko, who describes himself as 6' 9" and 260 pounds on his Facebook page, attended Grossmont High School and graduated in 2009.

Bajko was listed in critical condition at Sharp Memorial Hospital as of 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Police don't know what prompted the fight and aren't considering it gang-related yet, saying it is an ongoing investigation.

Grossmont College head coach Michael Jordan told the Union Tribune that Bajko is a sophomore and plays defensive lineman for the Griffins.
