Inmate Attacks 2 Correctional Officers at State Prison

An inmate left two correctional peace officers with injuries after an attack at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego.

Wednesday afternoon, inmate Michael Stevens, 58, punched a correctional officer in the face, knocking him to the ground, officials said. Stevens then turned to another officer and hit him several times in the face until he was unconscious.

Stevens only stopped when other officers arrived and were able to subdue him, according to the state prison.

The first officer suffered minor injuries, while the second had a head injury. Both were taken to an outside hospital and have since been released.

The inmate was treated for minor injuries by prison staff. He has been rehoused in the prisonโ€™s administrative segregation unit until an investigation is complete, officials said.

In a similar incident, another three correctional officers from Donovan were hospitalized a week ago in a separate inmate attack.

According to the prison, Stevens was imprisoned on April 13, 2001, on a 10-year sentence for assault with a deadly weapon in Los Angeles County.

In 2003, he was sentenced to life with parole while in a Kern County prison for battery on a peace officer and similar offenses.
