Firefighter, Officers Hospitalized in Riverside Chemical Leak

A chemical leak sent a firefighter and three police officers to a hospital and closed down a high school in Riverside Monday morning.

The unknown chemical -- in gas form -- was reported in the area of 10th and 14th streets and Victoria Avenue early Monday, according to the Riverside Fire Department.

The surrounding neighborhood of 130 homes were ordered to shelter in place as a HazMat team investigated the container that leaked the gas. Abraham Lincoln High School near 13th Street and Victoria was closed as a precaution before the schoolday began.

Three police officers, one firefighter and seven residents went to a hospital for evaluation. The gas was being treated as hazardous waste until it could be determined what it is.

Fire officials said the incident had been "neutralized" around 11 a.m.
