Blockbuster has been, well, busted.

The video rental giant agreed Monday to pay $300,000 in "civil fines and costs" as part of a ruling against them for unfair business practices, officials announced yesterday.

The lawsuit was brought by the district attorneys of Los Angeles and San Diego counties.

“The judgment is an important step toward pricing accuracy and fairness in the marketplace,” said District Attorney Steve Cooley in a prepared statement. “Consumers should be able to rely on the accuracy of the prices charged at the check stand.”

The 300-grand late fee is the result of a nearly five-year investigation by weights and measures agents statewide and consumer protection investigators and prosecutors for both counties," according to Cooley's office.

The civil complaint alleged Blockbuster stores in California charged customers more than the currently advertised or posted price on scanned items in violation of unfair competition and false advertising statutes.

Blockbuster will pay $237,750 in penalties and $62,250 in costs to county weights and measures agencies and the prosecutors’ offices. Blockbuster also was prohibited from charging an amount greater the price currently advertised.
