I've only had the opportunity to see Lyle Lovett live once before, but I can honestly say it is still one of the most memorable and definitely a favorite in my show-going history. The show I saw was also at Humphreys and was phenomenal. Lovett is a crafty songwriter and an impeccable performer, but even more than that, he is an absolutely hysterical storyteller. His stage banter is witty, and by the end of the show, you wanna sit at the bar and have a beer with him just to hear him talk a little bit more. One story he told was about a surfing trip to Baja California. He was taking a break from music and came across a mariachi band. There were more than 20 members in the band, but he fell in love and invited them to tour with him. That night, the full mariachi band opened in full regalia, and accompanied Lyle on several of his songs. There's an intimacy you feel at his shows, and that will certainly be the case tonight when he returns to Humphreys.
